People gathered to pray at the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, Japan, in commemoration of 80 years since the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on the city on Aug. 6, 1945, marking the first use of a nuclear weapon in war. More than 100,000 people were killed instantly from the bomb and hundreds of thousands died in the following years from injuries and illnesses caused by the radiation. The use of atom bombs in Hiroshima and, three days later, the nearby city Nagasaki, remain the only times nuclear weapons have been used in warfare. Japan surrendered on Aug. 15.

People in London collect their long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 console, which launched worldwide on Wednesday with stores opening at midnight to accommodate record-breaking pre-orders. While some gaming fans may be deterred by the $449.99 price tag, others are eager to experience upgrades like better graphics, more storage and the new Mario Kart World game. Analysts see the Switch 2 as a strategic shift for Nintendo, offering familiar branding with appealing improvements like more support for third-party games, which could help it compete more directly with Sony and Microsoft.
