May 14 — New Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff and an avid tennis fan, received Italian champion Jannik Sinner in a private audience at the Vatican on Wednesday. Sinner — currently the world No. 1 in men’s singles — presented him with a racket and ball and asked if he wanted to play, although Vatican News quotes the pope as responding, “Here we’ll break something. Best not to!”

May 13 — Children in Srinagar return to school as educational institutions reopen across the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, following a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan after weeks of heightened tensions. Schools and colleges in the border areas will remain closed as a precautionary measure.
