South Korea’s worst wildfires
March 25 – Residents in Andong, some 190 kilometers southeast of South Korea’s capital Seoul, watch wildfires spread to a nearby hillside. The worst wildfires in the country’s history have killed at least 24 people forced more than 23,000 to relocate.
The dervish protester
March 24 – Police officers use pepper spray on a demonstrator wearing traditional dervish clothing during a protest in Istanbul in reaction to the arrest of the city mayor and Erdogan challenger Ekrem Imamoglu. The mayor’s arrest sparked days of unrest across Turkey.
Mandalay earthquake destruction
March 28 – A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, causing destruction like here in Mandalay. Tremors were felt across Thailand as well as in neighboring Chinese provinces, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.
Pope Francis out of hospital
March 23 – Pope Francis appears at a balcony of Rome’s Gemelli hospital just before being discharged. The pontiff had been hospitalized for a double pneumonia since Feb 14.
Cherry blossom influencers
March 24 – People take pictures of cherry blossoms at Tokyo’s Ueno Park in Tokyo as Hanami season (the Japanese custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers) kicks off in and around the Japanese capital.
Argentina’s Day Of Memory, Truth And Justice
March 24 – A protester marches during the commemoration of the 49th anniversary of the 1976 military coup in Buenos Aires. The “Day Of Memory, Truth And Justice” marks the overthrowing of Isabel Peron as president of Argentina by a military junta.
Depardieu trial opens
March 27 – French actor Gérard Depardieu arrives with his lawyer Jeremie Assous for his trial at the Paris criminal court. The cinema icon is charged with sexually assaulting two women during a film shoot in 2021. Depardieu, 76, has been accused of improper behavior by 20 women, but this is the first case to come to trial.
Busy Oregon bees
March 25 – Honey bees return to their hive after foraging on spring flowers at a farm near Elkton, in rural southwestern Oregon.
