An estimated two million people took to the streets in cities all around the world on May 25 for a worldwide day of protest against agro-biotech giant Monsanto and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) in general.

The “March Against Monsanto” movement denounced GMOs as harmful to human health and the environment. Their claims, listed on their website, are also political: “For too long, Monsanto has been the benefactor of corporate subsidies and political favoritism. Organic and small farmers suffer losses while Monsanto continues to forge its monopoly over the world’s food supply.”

According to organizers, the global demonstration took place in 52 countries and 436 cities, AP reports.
