Los Angeles wildfires
Jan. 8 – A restaurant in Pacific Palisades is engulfed by the wildfires that have been raging around Los Angeles and through Southern California. The blaze, ignited on January 7th, was fanned by strong Santa Ana winds, with gusts reaching up to 80 mph in some areas. Firefighters have been battling against the inferno, which has already claimed five lives.
Tibet earthquake aftermath
Jan. 7 – Rescuers search for survivors through rubble near Lhasa, in the Chinese autonomous region of Tibet, as the death toll from Tuesday’s 6.8-magnitude earthquake rises to 126. The quake, whose epicenter was located around 80 km (50 miles) north of Mount Everest, was felt in neighboring Nepal, Bhutan and parts of northern India.
Justin Trudeau resigns
Jan. 6 – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau looks down as he announces his resignation as Canada’s Liberal leader and prime minister, outside his official residence of Rideau Cottage in Ottawa. Trudeau stepped down after more than nine years leading the country, citing divisions within his party and poor polling leading into the elections later this year.
Donald Trump Jr. in Greenland
Jan. 7 – Donald Trump Jr. lands in Nuuk, Greenland, for a brief “personal day-trip” amid renewed controversy over his father’s claims that he wants to acquire the Danish territory. The visit, occurring just weeks after President-elect Trump reiterated his intention to bring Greenland under U.S. control, has sparked speculation and concern among Danish and Greenlandic officials.
France marks 10 years since Charlie Hebdo attacks
Jan. 7 – Flowers, pencils and a Charlie Hebdo laid down on the ground in Paris commemorate 10 years since the 2015 Paris attacks on the satirical weekly’s office. The al-Qaeda linked terrorist assault on the newspaper, targeted for having published caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed, claimed 12 lives.
U.S. President Jimmy Carter’s lying in state
Jan. 7 – The flag-draped casket of former President Jimmy Carter is shot from above at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, where he lay in state ahead of his funeral service on January 9. The 39th president, who passed away at 100 on December 29, 2024, leaves a legacy of public service and humanitarian work that extends beyond his presidency.
Blaze destroys Accra’s massive secondhand market
Jan. 2 – People walk through the remains of Accra’s Kantamanto Market after it was devastated by a fire blaze that destroyed hundreds of shops. The blaze, which erupted on January 2, 2025, engulfed the market in Ghana’s capital (one of West Africa’s largest secondhand clothing markets), depriving thousands of traders of their livelihoods.
Demi Moore wins first Golden Globe
Jan. 5 – Demi Moore, 62, clutches her Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her role in The Substance, the first major acting award in her 45-year career. The night was dominated by Emilia Pérez and The Brutalist, which won four Golden Globes each.
