CORMORANT — A 7-year-old dog named Duke has been elected honorary mayor of the small town of Cormorant, Minn. Winning just 12 votes, he is said to have won by a “landslide.”
Local residents hope the furry pol, who will officially be sworn in Saturday, will continue guarding the town, making the community safer and enforcing speed limits.
But Duke’s election is not an historic first. Stubbs the cat has been mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska, for 17 years now. The town of Rabbit Hash, Ky., is also known for its string of canine mayors, and Bosco the dog was mayor of Sunol, Calif., from 1981 until his death in 1994.
