Markets rebound after U.S. tariff shock

April 8 — A trader works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange as U.S. stocks close sharply lower. It’s been a rollercoaster of a week for global markets, as Donald Trump’s tariffs and subsequent pauses wreaked havoc on international markets.

Palestinian solidarity rally in Beirut

April 7 — A Palestinian woman chants during a protest in Beirut, Lebanon, against Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza. Hundreds of Palestinian refugees and Lebanese citizens joined a global solidarity strike, voicing support for the people of Gaza and calling for an end to the violence.

Activists vs. police in Rotterdam harbor

April 9 — Dutch police detain an activist during a protest in Rotterdam. Members of the “Geef Tegengas” group blocked train lines at the city’s shipping harbor, demanding a halt to fossil fuel trade, restrictions on goods linked to human rights abuses, and an immediate trade and arms embargo on Israel.

Greece general strike

April 9 — Protesters rally in Athens during a nationwide 24-hour strike. Labor unions demand the full restoration of collective bargaining rights, calling for a reversal of austerity-era labor policies imposed during Greece’s economic crisis.

Soyuz Launch

April 8 — A Soyuz 2.1a rocket launches from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, carrying the spacecraft to the International Space Station. Onboard are ISS Expedition 72/73 crew members: NASA astronaut Jonny Kim and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky.

Mount Kanlaon erupts

April 8 — Mount Kanlaon on Negros Island, Philippines, erupts in a “moderately explosive” event, sending ash 4,000 meters into the air and triggering pyroclastic flows down its southern slopes. The eruption began just before 6 a.m. and lasted nearly an hour, according to the National Volcanology Institute.

Milan Design Week

April 8 — Visitors explore the immersive “Hyper Portal” installation by Glo at Palazzo Moscova in Milan, Italy. The futuristic exhibit, part of the city’s design week events, invites attendees to step into a multi-sensory space blending light, sound, and motion for a fully interactive experience.

Moscow marks Feast Of Annunciation

April 7 — Patriarch Kirill of Moscow participates in a ceremony marking the Feast of the Annunciation, outside the Annunciation Cathedral in the Russian capital.

Belgian cycling crash

April 9 — Norwegian Jonas Iversby Hvideberg of Uno-X Mobility lies injured on the ground after a crash during the men’s race of the 113th edition of the “Scheldeprijs” one-day cycling event, 202.8 km from Terneuzen, the Netherlands to Schoten, Belgium.
