In Syria, LGBTQ+ individuals are being stripped of their freedom, dignity and right to defend themselves. Only a few voices and organizations working in secrecy attempt to shed light on the violations against them in an environment that is increasingly hostile toward anyone who dares to advocate for marginalized groups.
In Egypt, there is a disturbingly high rate of sexual abuse cases by members of the clergy who evade accountability. It’s time for Egyptian authorities to create better mechanisms to investigate these cases, punish perpetrators, and support survivors.
Amid increasingly dire economic, social and humanitarian conditions in Egypt, the charitable work of Islamic and Christian religious institutions is important. Yet these institutions also support the government’s failed economic policies.
