When the Black Keys decide to cover other people’s songs, the result is usually pretty good. And when they decide to cover a masterpiece, such as Edwyn Collins’ 1994 “A Girl Like You,” it is truly a special occasion. Indeed, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, the band’s bluegrass rockers, saved the song for a gig earlier this month at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, in their home-state of Ohio.
The cover coincides with the Nov. 7 release of a documentary on Collins called “The Possibilities Are Endless,” which chronicles the Scottish musician’s recovery after suffering a stroke in 2005 that left him unable to walk or speak.
