Election year in Turkey: end of an era for ErdoÄan?
Turkey heads to the polls in June in elections that decide the country's future direction. It is a referendum on President ErdoÄan, but also a challenge for the divided opposition. Much is at stake in a country roiled by multiple crises and declining trust in its leaders, writes Bekir AÄÄąrdÄąr in independent weekly newspaper Oksijen.
Both the world and Turkey are struggling with crises. Global clashes of politics, economics and cultures are reflected in every aspect of our lives. As humanity attempts to move from an industrialized to information society, a series of crises of climate change, food and energy shortages, and regional and global migration undermine our very foundations.
Turkey is facing these multiple crises with its old institutions and rules. It has not yet had the transformations of mentality in terms of education, law, secularist state and gender equality that are the requirements of an industrial-age society. Whatâs more, Turkey has to handle the uncertainty and chaos of this tangle of crises with politicians who are unable to overcome their mindsets of political polarization and identity politics.
While the pandemic and the following economic crisis have started to silence identity politics and given a louder voice to the issues of class tension, injustice and poverty, politicians once again drag us towards identity and polarization.
The opposition parties in Turkey cannot find time to compete with the government, led by President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄan who has held power since 2014, as they are busy fighting among themselves. People are trying to get rid of the heavy chains of polarization and identities, but politics is putting them back in chains.
We are in a maelstrom in Turkey. The cost of living and poverty are high while hope for tomorrow is low. Honest work and morals are no longer favored for climbing up the social ladder, nor are they effective. Poverty is spreading, deepening, being transferred between generations.
We have come a very long way. Society has changed, but we still debate the same subjects, such as the rule of the law, secularism, education, social justice, and the Kurdish issue. We still cannot even condemn the sexual abuse of a minor unanimously. We have lost our shared vision. We cannot even share the same feelings or joy in a song or a joke.
We have collected many disappointments. Also, we learned to delay our hopes. Now, as we start a new year, my new yearâs wish is not to leave our hopes as our legacy. Let us not only rely on the ingenuity of the political leaders to make our dreams happen. Let us not wrongly believe that we will elect a president and everything will be alright. Let us know that we will experience whatever we are going to experience in this country thanks to the involvement and efforts of each of us.
We have learned things from such disappointments. We have our experiences, our collective memory. Never believe those who say society has a short memory: the memory of this society is not short, but people are afraid to remember. People are pretending to have forgotten things because they are not sure about how to deal with them when they remember.
Nobody has forgotten our shared tragedies.
Of course, society has stereotypes, too. Its connection to reality has been disrupted. People may believe that the COVID-19 vaccines are manipulating our genes, but the majority of the people have nothing to do with such nonsense. People are against other people who are different from them when they are asked who they would want as neighbors or business partners, but thatâs the same everywhere in the world.
For example, almost five percent of Turkish people say they would not want to be in-laws with the people who vote for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) or the main opposition Republican Peopleâs Party (CHP). Trust is always low in such polls. But, take a look around, does anybody file for a divorce because their in-laws are voting for the other party?
Our people are eager to be individuals, but wary of being citizens. People do not do certain things because the institutions are lacking, because they do not trust in the rule of law, because they fear how the police and judges would treat them according to how they are dressed, because they are afraid in the streets.
Society needs to put in effort to escape this gridlock. A belief in the future, a shared life and a shared horizon is required for that effort. People should believe that this can be done by politics; that they can exist in this shared future as themselves with their identities, beliefs and choices.
The election process of 2023, for the presidential and parliamentary elections, can be an opportunity. Polls predict that even if President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄan wins the presidential election, his party almost certainly wonât have the majority in the parliament.
On the other hand, if the opposition alliance of six parties (led by the CHP and the IYI Party) wins the presidency, they wonât win the majority from the parliamentary elections either. The opposition can have the simple parliamentary majority if the other alliance of six parties (led by the pro-Kurdish Peopleâs Democratic Party or HDP) supports them.
But a return to the parliamentary system for Turkey from ErdoÄanâs current grip on power requires an absolute majority in the parliament, which can only be achieved with a consensus among these twelve.
These odds may look bad today, but maybe this can be a historical opportunity for the country.
Turkeyâs political culture and style may be forced to change by the risks and opportunities brought by global conflict. We can force that change. We can force a new story upon the political actors instead of asking them who their candidate will be.
These next elections will decide our future. Do we consider ourselves worthy of a shared future with institutions and rules while leaning on universal truths and the right to a dignified life?
The people of this country want justice. The poor want justice of income; youth and women want justice in representation; the Kurds want justice for the recognition of their existences. But everybody wants justice.
At the same time, everybody prioritizes the health and order of their own households. People want to be involved in production, share the wealth and have better economic growth and fairer distribution of income. Also, everybody is scared to death of climate change, drought, the food crisis, homelessness and being old and needy of care. Believe me, it does not matter being a Turk or Kurd, religious or atheist, man or woman, educated or uneducated when it comes to these fears. Everybody wants civilization, prosperity and justice.
What we can do, and should do, is to force the politicians. We should try to be involved and active in politics. Besides that, we should fight against society's fears and inaccurate beliefs instead of mocking them or ignoring them. More importantly, we should believe in this country, this society and the shared future.

⢠Peru clashes kill 17:At least 17 people were killed and 68 injured in clashes with police in southern Peru at the border with Bolivia. Monday was the deadliest day so far of protests demanding early elections, the resignation of new President Dina Boluarte, and the release of jailed former president Pedro Castillo, who is serving 18 months of pre-trial detention on charges of rebellion, which he denies.
⢠Proud Boys trial: A jury was chosen on Monday for the trial of former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio and four other far-right extremist group members charged with plotting to stop the transfer of presidential power by attacking the U.S. Capitol after the 2020 election. If convicted of seditious conspiracy, they face up to 20 years of prison. More than 930 people have been charged federally since the storming of Capitol Hill on Jan. 6, 2021.

Applying Artificial intelligence to vocal cues is increasingly being used to detect a range of illnesses from COVID-19 to asthma and even depression. But such technology also comes with serious ethical concerns, reports BenoĂŽt Georges in French daily Les Echos.
đŁď¸ The concept is simple: every pathology that affects the lungs, the heart, the brain, the muscles, or the vocal cords can lead to voice modifications. By using digital tools to analyze a recording, it must be possible to detect vocal biomarkers, the same way vocal recognition algorithms learned to understand a spoken language based on millions of sound samples.
đą Many start-ups have already started developing smartphone apps or websites. In the U.S., Kintsugi already offers to professionals a mental health disorders detection tool with the slogan: âWe can hear what your patient doesnât tell you.â Sonde Health developed a smartphone app about mental health wellbeing that also allows them to collect more vocal samples. They also offer biomarkers for respiratory illnesses under license.
â ď¸ The use of vocal biomarkers will have to go through the medical community and earn the patientâs trust. Its backers will have to clearly explain the benefits (high-speed, non-invasive, early diagnostic, online checkups) while guaranteeing the confidentiality and transparency of the tools. The biggest fear is that, like facial recognition, digital tools detecting vocal biomarkers could be used without users' permission.
