CANNES - The most prestigious film festival in the world kicks off Wednesday in the south of France for its 66th edition. Opening the festivities is Baz Luhrman’s much-awaited 3D interpretation of The Great Gatsby – fitting for the glamour of Cannes.
Twenty films are competing for the prestigious top prize: the Palme d’Or. The selection of movies comes from all around the world and will be judged by a star-studded jury headed by Steven Spielberg.
2013 is a strong showing for U.S. directors, who make up about 25% of the films in the running for the coveted Palme d'Or. France is another well represented country, while the rest come from all over the world.
