Clashes erupt in Syria as U.N. peacekeepers set to arrive for talks

Syrian troops target neighborhoods near Damascus as U.N. peacekeepers are scheduled to arrive in the capital for talks on deploying observers to monitor a cease-fire.

(CNN) Damascus - At least 21 people died as fresh violence erupted nationwide, according to the opposition Local Coordination Committees of Syria.

Security forces stormed the Damascus neighborhoods of Kfar Shams and Douma amid heavy gunfire and explosions, the group said.

Defectors and government soldiers battled in Aleppo province as a voice from a mosque megaphone urged the military to leave, according to the opposition group.
