American journalist and French photographer among 27 killed in Homs

American journalist Marie Colvin and award-winning French photographer Remi Ochlik have been killed in the besieged Syrian city of Homs amid heavy shelling from government forces.

(AP) Homs - Colvin was a well-known, veteran foreign correspondent for the U.K."s Sunday Times newspaper. Ochlik had won a World Press Photo award this month for his work covering the uprising in Libya.

A witness contacted by Reuters from Amman said shells hit the house in the Baba Amr district of Homs in which they were staying and a rocket hit them when they tried to escape.

In northern India along the bustling Jammu-Srinagar national highway near Pampore — known as the saffron town of Kashmir —people are busy picking up saffron flowers to fill their wicker baskets.

During the autumn season, this is a common sight in the Valley as saffron harvesting is celebrated like a festival in Kashmir. The crop is harvested once a year from October 21 to mid-November.
