SHANGHAI – Typhoon Haikui ploughed into China’s eastern coast on Wednesday morning, knocking down buildings, cutting off power, disrupting train and airline services and forcing authorities to relocate millions of people.
The winds were at "severe typhoon" strength when Haikui made landfall in the province of Zhejiang, about 225 kilometers south of Shanghai, according to the China Meteorological Administration. Haikui later weakened into a tropical storm as it moved inland.
It is the third typhoon in a week to hit China’s eastern coast, forcing authorities to evacuate 374,000 people from Shanghai and 250,000 from the Zhejiang area, the China Daily reports.
The official Xinhua news agency estimates that a total 1.5 million people had to be moved from the typhoon’s path.
