ZHENGZHOU - A fire that broke out in a private orphanage in China’s central Henan province has killed seven children, according to local government officials.

Four children were pronounced dead at the scene while three died in the ambulance. Another child is receiving treatment in a local hospital.

Rescuers did not know how many children were inside when the flames consumed the orphanage, reports Xinhua. Officials have not identified the cause of the fire.

The building is a private home for orphans and abandoned children. It is run by a woman named Yuan Lihai, reported Xinhua, a street vendor who has been helping these children for over 20 years.

The province had already suffered a tragedy involving children in December, when a man stabbed 23 students in their school.
