BENGHAZI - National Security Chief Col. Faraj al-Deirsy was killed overnight in front of his home in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, according to police and interior ministry sources.

The head of Benghazi police died from multiple gunshot wounds after gunmen attacked him on his way home from work, Reuters reports.

Libya’s deputy interior minister Omar al-Khadrawi told AP: "Three men opened fire, killed him and then fled the scene," adding that it was unclear who was behind the killing of the top security official.

Benghazi, Libya’s second biggest city, has witnessed a series of assassinations and car bombs over the past months by unidentified assailants targeting mainly security officials who worked under the rule of ousted dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
