JERUSALEM - Three Palestinians were wounded early Monday in three successive Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip in response to a rocket attack launched toward southern Israel from the Palestinian enclave, reports Haaretz.
Israeli Air Force helicopters and F-16s were heard around midnight over the Gaza Strip, followed by three successive explosions, witnesses said.
The Air Force raid struck an empty military training camp for Hamas militants in eastern Gaza city, with no casualties reported.
It also blasted a smuggling tunnel under the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, with shrapnel from the Israeli missile hitting a nearby house where three Palestinian civilians were wounded, reports Haaretz.
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened a large-scale military operation against the rocket-launching militants in the Gaza Strip after a rocket attack Saturday hit the southern town of Be’er Sheva and injured seven Israeli civilians.
Schools were closed in Be’er Sheva and in nearby town of Ashdod, keeping some 100,000 schoolchildren at home.
Israel held Hamas fully responsible for the rocket attack.
