So GIF has been named America's Word of the Year by the Oxford American Dictionary?
Facepalm.


For some reason, lexicographers chose the unusual verb form of the word. As in "to GIF." As in "Hey dude, I just GIF'd Lana Del Rey twirling on SNL."

Chill Britney, some people are pretty happy that GIFs are getting their due...


Really quite very excited.

The word beat stiff competition from this year's other hardworking verbiages, such as "superstorm" and "YOLO" (acronym for You Only Live Once"). As in:

Did you know GIFs have been in existence for 25 years?

And that GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format.

In 2012, it does feel like we've been living a GIF overload.

With most GIFs being, like, totally whatever.


Still, GIFs did bring some much needed levity to the U.S. election.

And the Olympics.

So thank you GIFs.

If nothing else, you're way better than the U.K. Word Of The Year: Omnishambles.
