PARIS - Supporters of the Syrian opposition movement unfurled a huge flag smeared with blood under the Eiffel Tower on Friday, France TV Info reports.

The red, white and green flag with three red stars is the former flag of Syria, used before the 1963 Ba'athist coup. It has been adopted by the Syrian National Council and the Free Syrian Army as their official flag.

According to the Europe 1 radio station, two activists climbed a scaffolding  to tie the 30-meter long flag from the Eiffel Tower's first floor. A banner read "21.000 dead, 65.000 missing, 2 million displaced. Those are criminal Assad's promised reforms." A second banner read "7 billion accomplices, 0 real true reaction, 1 single hope: our brave Free Syrian army."

French activist group France Syrie Democratie claimed responsibility for the action, aimed at raising support for the Syrian population in the international community.
