KARLSRUHE - Police say three people and a suspected gunman were dead Wednesday during a home eviction gone awry in Karlsruhe, southwest Germany, reports Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

Earlier in the morning, it was reported that a gunman took three to four people hostage, including a bailiff, after authorities attempted to evict him from an apartment.  A police spokesperson told the Munich-based daily that the gunman and the hostages were believed to be dead after hearing gunshots in the residence.

Die Welt reported that police stormed the apartment around noon on Wednesday after a burning smell was detected coming out from the apartment.

The incident had been escalating since 9:00 a.m. when the eviction was scheduled to take place.
